Context

Recently the Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare organized a conference on the pivotal role of space technology in the growth and development of India’s agricultural sector.

About

  • Krishi-DSS is a primary-of-its-type geospatial platform designed for Indian agriculture. It is a part of the Digital Public Infrastructure for Agriculture announced in the recent Budget.
  • The platform gives seamless access to comprehensive data which include satellite tv for pc pics, weather data, reservoir storage, groundwater levels and soil health data, which can be without difficulty accessed from anywhere at any time.

Space technology application in agriculture

    • Weather Predictions: Satellites provide data for correct climate forecasting, supporting farmers plan their activities, which include sowing, irrigation, and harvesting, to avoid losses due to detrimental weather conditions.
    • Water Resource Management: Satellite records are used to display water bodies and control water sources greater correctly, ensuring that irrigation is optimized and water is conserved.
    • Mobile Apps and Digital Platforms: Sevtechnologyl authorities and private initiatives use satellite data to provide actual-time advisory services to farmers through mobile apps.
      • Example: Kisan Suvidha mobile software to facilitate dissemination of data to farmers on the vital parameters viz.,  Weather; Market Prices;  Plant Protection;  Agro-advisory; Extreme Weather Alerts etc.
    • Crop Yield Forecasting: Satellite records are used to forecast crop yields, assisting in market planning and pricing techniques.
      • KISAN [C(K)rop Insurance using Space technology And geoiNformatcs] assignment launched in 2015 envisaged use of high-decision far off sensing statistics for max crop slicing test making plans and enhancing yield estimation.
  • Other initiatives
    • FASAL (Forecasting Agricultural output the usage of Space, Agro-meteorology, and Land-based observations): This task affords pre-harvest crop manufacturing forecasts using satellite statistics.
    • Bhuvan: The platform presents satellite imagery and services to assist agriculture, consisting of crop insurance and land use making plans.
    • Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY): This crop insurance scheme leverages satellite records to assess crop damage and technique claims quicker and more appropriately.

Agriculture Sector in India

  • India occupies fifth place globally with a total area of 2.66 million hectares in organic farming.
