Context

The Navika Sagar Parikrama II was an initiative taken by INSV Nalini or the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Nalini which is a marine sailing vessel of the Indian Navy. 

About

Navika Sagar Parikrama II is the first-of-its-kind naval voyage conducted by the Indian Navy in which an all-women team circumnavigated the world in one ship- INSV Tarini. The voyage which spanned approximately 22700 Nautical Miles was planned for establishing Sea consciousness, for demonstrating the maritime strength of India and for empowering women in the armed forces. 

Description and Details 

Objectives: 

  • Raising ocean awareness and encouraging the study of the ocean. 
  • Present India as a naval power and to highlight the country’s ship building talents. 
  • Military women should be empowered so that they could inspire the up and coming generations. 

Crew and Vessel: 

  • In the series all-women officers of six and sailors of three were there. 
  • INSV Tarini is a 55-foot sailing vessel, designed and built in India. 

Route and Duration: 

  • Completed 2 full revolutions around the globe and sailed 22 000 nominal miles. 
  • The tour was done in 254 days with stopovers at 20 different ports of different countries. 

Significance 

  • Historic Achievement:All-female crew of this boat was the first one to successfully complete that journey around the world. 
  • Maritime Awareness:Increased concern and knowledge about oceans and ocean related issues internationally. 
  • Women Empowerment: Explained women to be able to get a job and work in the armed forces.
