Context
The government has authorized the modified Pradhan Mantri Jaiv Indhan Vatavaran Anukool Fasal Awashesh Nivaran (PM-JI-VAN) Yojana.
About
- The modified scheme extends the implementation timeline by 5 years, i.e., till 2028-29.
- It now consists of superior biofuels constructed from lignocellulosic feedstocks–including agricultural and forestry residues, commercial waste, synthesis (syn) fuel, algae, and so on–in its scope.
- To promote more than one technology and multiple feedstocks, preference would now be given to project proposals with new technologies and innovations in the sector.
Significance
- The scheme aims to offer remunerative income to farmers for their agricultural residue and cope with environmental pollutants.
- The scheme also facilitates creating employment opportunities and contributes to India’s power protection and self-reliance.
- It also helps the development of superior biofuel technology and promotes the Make in India Mission.
- It also allows India’s bold target for net-0 GHG emissions by 2070.
About Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN scheme
- In 2019, Government had notified the “Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN (Jaiv Indhan- Vatavaran Anukool fasal awashesh Nivaran) Yojana”.
- It aimed at providing economic guidance to integrated bio-ethanol initiatives for setting up Second Generation (2G) ethanol tasks in the country the use of lignocellulosic biomass and other renewable feedstocks.
Biofuels
- Biomass can be converted immediately into liquid fuels, referred to as biofuels.
- The two most common styles of biofuels in use nowadays are ethanol and biodiesel, both of which constitute the first generation of biofuel generation.
- Ethanol: Ethanol (CH3CH2OH) is a renewable fuel that may be made from numerous plant substances, collectively known as “biomass.”
- Biodiesel: It is a liquid gas constituted of renewable assets, inclusive of new and used vegetable oils and animal fat and is a cleanser-burning substitute for petroleum based diesel gas.
- It is dependable and biodegradable and is produced through combining alcohol with vegetable oil, animal fat, or recycled cooking oil.
